Check out these events on the weekend:
- The holiday craft fair at the White Rock Museum & Archives begins Friday, November 23rd. The fair features local artisans and their creations. Head down to the museum to find “handmade jewellery, decorative holiday ornaments, tasty edibles and more.” The fair runs to December 22nd.
- There is another session of the Junior Pirates School (for ages 3-5) at the Vancouver Maritime Museum on Saturday, November 24th from 10:00-11:30am. This program allows “young pirate trainees and their parents [to] discover more about these seafaring bandits through pirate stories, hands-on activities and real life adventures.” An adult must accompany each child, and pre-registration is required. - Haven’t you always wanted to be a yo-yo expert? Head over to Science World at Telus World of Science on Saturday, November 24th and Sunday, November 25th to watch and learn yo-yo tricks with the help of yo-yo pro Damir Hot. Damir will perform a show of his tricks at 12:20pm on both days on the Peter Brown Centre Stage. There will also be yo-yo workshops at the museum both days at 1:00, 1:30, 2:00, and 2:30pm in the Eureka! Lab.
- Heritage Christmas at Burnaby Village Museum begins on Saturday, November 24th. This year’s theme is “A Christmas to Remember: A Storybook Christmas is Brought to Life.” The museum invites you to “step inside the pages to experience Christmas traditions from the past: sparkling decorations, the smell of pine and cedar, and sounds of carolers.” You will find decorations inspired by The Nutcracker Suite, The Gingerbread Man, and ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Children can share their special wishes with Father Christmas. Footlight Theatre will entertain visitors with performances of Little Red Riding Hood. There will be fresh baking in the kitchen at the Love Farmhouse. Various performers and artists, including musicians, storytellers, choirs, and artisans will be on hand at Burnaby Village Museum throughout the Heritage Christmas season, which runs to December 23rd. - The Japanese Canadian National Museum will be hosting a reception on Saturday, November 24th from 2-4pm for its new exhibition Shashin: Japanese Canadian Studio Photography to 1942. The exhibit curator, Grace Eiko Thomson, will be in attendance. Light refreshments will be served at this free event, and the exhibition catalogue will be available for purchase.
- The Vancouver Maritime Museum will be hosting an Explore Sunday on Sunday, November 25th from 12-4pm. Explore Sundays offer visitors the opportunity to focus on a particular theme or feature of the museum’s collection through a special guided tour. This Sunday’s theme is “Explore the Forgotten Mission,” which will examine the 1969 30-day submersible voyage of Ben Franklin and his crew, an event which was overshadowed by the lunar landing that occurred at the same time. The cost of the tour is included with regular admission.
- Richard Fauteux, a jewellery expert, will be giving a lecture at the Vancouver Museum on Sunday, November 25th at 2pm on the “Jewellery of La Belle Époque,” which ties in with the museum’s exhibit Women’s Fashions of La Belle Époque, 1890-1914. The lecture is free with museum admission, but you are encouraged to contact the museum in advance to reserve a seat for this event.
- The Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC will be presenting a book launch hosted by CBC’s Margaret Gallagher at the Vancouver Museum on Sunday, November 25th from 4-6pm. The book, Eating Stories: A Chinese Canadian and Aboriginal Potluck, was researched, discussed and written by 23 participants of Chinese Canadian or Aboriginal backgrounds. Eating Stories includes “memories of family gatherings, home cooking, restaurant outings, and other stories cooked up by the smells, tastes, sounds, sights, and textures that bring families and communities together.” Some of the authors will be reading from the book, and there will be an opportunity for questions from the audience.
