This first event will be of interest to educators and anyone else who organizes field trips for students and other groups:
- The 5th Annual BC Field Trip Fair will be held at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre and Vancouver Museum at 1100 Chestnut Street in Vanier Park Monday, September 17th from 3-6pm. The fair is a great way to learn about field trips (including school programs at museums) and transportation options. This year, 50 community organizations will be at the fair to present their programs. If you are unable to attend the fair, you can preview the programs on the BC Field Trip Guide website.
Here are some other events and activities taking place this week:
- Attention librarians, library students and manga fans! The exhibit Shojo Manga! Girl Power!, which examines the history of girl comics from Japan, opens Wednesday, September 19th at the Japanese Canadian National Museum. The public is invited to attend the opening reception (free of charge) at 7pm Wednesday evening, although attendees must RSVP in advance for the reception by emailing nogiwara@nikkeiplace.org or calling 604-777-7000 (ext. 109). The exhibit runs until November 9, 2007.
- The Museum of Anthropology is launching a new guided tour, A Matter of Taste: Ceramics and Culinary Connections, and the public is invited to participate (free of charge) in the first run of the tour on Thursday, September 20th at 7pm. If you wish to attend, you must pre-register for the tour by contacting the museum directly at 604-822-5087. According the museum, this tour “link[s] the amazing variety of food- and drink-related ceramics in the Koerner Ceramics Gallery with the unique cuisine they once contained.” After September 20th, the museum will welcome group bookings for the guided tour.
- The Maple Ridge Historical Society will be hosting a talk by author Lorien Wallace on Thursday, September 20th at 7:30pm at St. Andrew’s Heritage Hall. Lorien Wallace’s talk is titled “Canadian Gothic: The Pillow Book of a Flower Child,” and will recall the speaker’s experiences in the hippie communes of the Kootenays. Please contact the Maple Ridge Museum, which is run by the Maple Ridge Historical Society, for more information about this event.
Have a great week!
