There are several great events happening this weekend. Enjoy one, a few, or many!
- North Shore Heritage Weekend takes place September 14th-16th. This annual event is described as “a celebration of heritage from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay” and is sponsored by the District of North Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver, the District of West Vancouver, the North Vancouver Museum & Archives, and the West Vancouver Museum & Archives. There are a number of activities going on during the weekend, so you will want to check out the full brochure for details. There will be heritage displays mounted by the many heritage societies on the North Shore. Self-guided walking tours will take you past North Vancouver’s heritage trees and through West Vancouver’s historic neighbourhoods. You will also have opportunities to visit local museums and to attend talks by North Shore historians. The weather looks particularly good for Saturday, and this special weekend event is a great way to get outside to enjoy it!
- If you’re heading to the North Shore this weekend, you will probably want to check out the new exhibit at the West Vancouver Museum & Archives. The Black Slip: The Painting of Jane Billaux opens on Saturday, September 15th. There will be a short presentation at 3:15pm on Saturday about Jane Billaux (admission by donation). This will be followed by the opening reception for the exhibit from 4:00-6:00pm. The exhibit will remain at the museum until October 27, 2007.
- The West Vancouver Museum & Archives is also hosting a talk and guided bus tour on Saturday, September 15th at 1pm about artist B.C. Binning and the inspiration he found in the local landscape. Tickets are $10 and are limited. Please contact the museum at 604- 925-7179 for more information or to make a reservation.
- If you enjoy music, you will want to visit the Museum of Anthropology at UBC this weekend. Locura will perform classic Latin jazz on Saturday, September 15th at 3pm. The museum offers this description of Locura’s music: “Unrelenting and infectious! From the Cuban influence on the New York jazz scene in the 40’s to the Brazilian contribution of bosso nova and samba, to the Puerto Rican and Dominican melding of their respective rhythms, Locura celebrated the music that has evolved from these rich collaborations.” On Sunday, September 16th at 3pm, you can catch Battery Opera: Bob’s Lounge — under the oppressive weight of history in the Great Hall at MOA. This event will feature writer-singer David McIntosh, Max Murphy (baritone saxophone), Finn Manniche (cello), and Paul Ternes (“as the Austrian”). For more information about these events, please contact the museum directly.
- If you’re looking for family activities in Vancouver this weekend, these children’s programs will be happening at museums in the city:
- The Vancouver Maritime Museum will be holding one of its Pirate Academies for children ages 6-9 on Saturday, September 15th from 10am-2pm. Please contact the museum to register (pre-registration is required).
